"A PERFECT MOMENT, Captured"
Psychedelic film and photography meet DRIES VAN NOTEN designs – on view and on sale at Store 81.
Andreas Murkudis and Dries Van Noten have joined forces in the form of an installation for Berlin Gallery Weekend 2021. The collaboration comprises a photographic installation using the full height of the store’s 10-meter-high windows and a specially dedicated temporary space within ANDREAS MURKUDIS 81 that houses Van Noten’s designs. A framework to portray all of the layers of the DRIES VAN NOTEN Spring/ Summer 2021 collection, the translucent photographs cover sections of the store’s expansive industrial windows – relics of the days when the space housed a printing workshop. As such, visitors can engage with the installation en plein air, in anticipation of uncertain Covid restrictions.
The large-scale photographs are the works of Viviane Sassen, who produced them for DRIES VAN NOTEN. They capture garments of the collection shot within projections of the visionary films of New Zealand artist Len Lye – a pioneer who played an important role in harnessing motion in art. The installation is thus the outcome of an artistic triple entente.
Filmed in the 1920s to 1940s, painted with colour and motifs scratched onto the celluloid, the films were precursors of the psychedelia craze that would follow forty years later. Motifs from Lye’s work are carried through to the prints of the fashion designer’s Spring/ Summer 2021 collection for women and men.
A bouquet of bulbs by BOCCI – created to react to and reflect the colours of the photographs – serves as the interior light source, illuminating the translucent photographs from within ANDREAS MURKUDIS 81.
To make this installation ever so memorable, clients are invited to take home two exclusive limited-edition posters featuring motifs of Viviane Sassen’s work for DRIES VAN NOTEN. With a limited production run of only 250, these posters will be a cherished keepsake of this exciting exhibition, which will run until July 30th, 2021.
"A temporary exhibition area is dedicated to the collaboration and provides an extraordinary aesthetic framework of assembled and layered images and fabrics."
