A friend showed me this fascinating project: Babled, known for his lighting designs for VENINI, traveled to Zanzibar – and then the pandemic hit. While he was stuck there, he came up with the idea of creating chairs from driftwood in collaboration with the local community. The result was unique chairs for both adults and children, complemented by hand-batiked seat cushions.

BABLED EDITIONS, founded by Emmanuel Babled, creates limited series of furniture pieces and design objects based on extensive research on worldwide craft techniques with special focus on Italy’s artisanal excellence. Babled’s designs seek to challenge master craftsmen towards new levels of experimentation and innovation. The recent venture of working with Tanzanian artisans marked a shift in the designer’s approach, using design for social impact by facilitating economic growth for local producers whilst introducing their expertise to the international arena.
