I discovered PHANTOM HANDS during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The founders started with the Chandigarh series, which they craft in exceptional quality. They then reached out to European designers and asked them to work with Indian materials. What’s particularly impressive is the sustainability of their products – the room dividers, for example, are made from leftover wood.

Phantom Hands

Founded in 2013, PHANTOM HANDS started as a curated vintage objects catalog by Deepak Srinath and Aparna Rao. Guided by the cosmopolitan modernism of early independent India, particularly Pierre Jeanneret’s designs for the city of Chandigarh in the 1950s, the two founders explored the idea of re-editing these iconic silhouettes using the same craft-based production that was originally used 70 years ago. The Project Chandigarh collection, launched in May 2015, began with the three recognizable Jeanneret office chairs and has since grown steadily to include collaborations with contemporary designers.
